Behind the Scenes on making Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows score
Ronald Bilius Weasley. Ronniekins. Won-Won. Harry’s Wheezy. Our king. A pureblood. It’s so easy to forget he’s one, isn’t it, given the fact he never emphasizes this, some would argue, rather important trait of a wizard, especially in those dark times when Muggles, Muggleborns and Half-bloods are all in grave danger. But that’s not how Ron was brought up. He comes from one of the oldest and most honourable wizarding families who do not value people by their family trees or who their ancestors were, but by their actions and what kind of people they are. Blood traitors, that’s what Ron and his family are called derogatorily. And what they never regretted being - not even at times when their closest family members’ lives were threatened.
Ron never thought he was supreme to Harry or Hermione in any way even though there were times when he would be the only one familiar with certain terms, customs, names - and let’s face it, he probably could have gloated as moments when one knew something Hermione did not were extremely rare. Instead he offered and shared his knowledge which came naturally to him with the two, not even realizing how beneficial and useful his beign informed always was.
Ron lived in poverty all his life - he was the 6th son in a family of seven children, who probably never even received anything new throughout his entire childhood. But he never seemed to complain about that either. At least not out loud. It was just something he had learned to live with as he did not know any other way. Sure it bothered him. Sure he wished he and his family were richer. Sure he spent nights imagining what it would be like to live a life where you didn’t have to wear Fred’s hand-me-down robes or use Charlie’s old wand or fly ancient brooms with barely any magic left in them. He never burdened Harry or Hermione with it, did he? And he could have. They are his best friends - he could have shared every single trouble or worry with them. But he knew there were more important things they had to deal with so he kept his internal struggle to himself. Which leads us to Ron’s insecurities and how he never thought he was good enough.
With the Burrow full of kids and young people of all ages, some more successful than the others - Ron could never be in the spotlight. Or at least not for a very long time. I would never say he was neglected because Molly and Arthur are two most caring parents who not only fret about their own children (especially Molly), but also those they consider part of their family even though they’re not - like Harry, Hermione and even Lupin, Sirius, Tonks, etc. It was simply difficult to really stand out when his brothers were all successful at something - Bill, a capable curse-breaker working for one of the most famous banks in the wizarding world; Charlie, extremely talented Quidditch player and an expert on dragons; Percy - the most hard-working and ambitious Weasley child who always had impeccable grades; Fred and George - maybe not successful in a traditional sense, but rather gifted in many fields, e.g. Quidditch and charm-invention which helped them open a rather popular store that secured them financially. Basically, Ron’s older brothers all managed to find their way and lead lives they always wanted which somehow made him feel as though he could never achieve their level of success.
And who are Ron’s best friends? The most famous boy/young man in the entire world - the only person who survived the Dark Lord’s killing curse, the Boy who Lived - in short the hero and the brightest witch of her age. And who is he? Just a 6th child in a poor wizarding family with no special talents or crucial skills to contribute to their little trio. At least that’s what Ron thinks. He has to live with this conviction his entire life, fearing that he could be abandoned by either of the two any given day. They don’t need him, they are both more capable than he is, braver, smarter, Harry’s a better Quidditch player, Hermione’s better at, well, nearly everything. So why are they still here, why haven’t they turned their backs on him already?
Because Ron’s not just a grey figure in the background - he’s an irreplaceable component of the trio. His humour and wit colours their relationship. His hot temper makes him a person who can jump to conclusions and get angry easily and his jealousy makes it difficult to calmly accept things he does not like (e.g. Hermione and Krum, Harry being one of the Triwizard Tournament champions, etc.) but just as quickly as he loses his temper, he calms down, unwilling to admit to himself and the others his rage did not last long and that he soon realized he was in the wrong. It’s precisely his complexes that are the root of all his rash actions (e.g. when he left Harry and Hermione during their quest for horcruxes). But what makes him a better person than he probably thinks he is is the fact he always comes back. As he said himself, the moment he left the tent he realized he had made a terrible mistake and he wanted to find his way back to the two people he cared about most which was what he kept trying to do for days and weeks afterwards until he finally managed to track them down. Dumbledore knew it and Harry knows it and it’s as clear as day - Ron’s best traits tend to get overshadowed by his insecurities, but even though he has to battle them almost daily, he is strong enough to conquer them one by one and that is why they never stopped believing in him. Quite rightly so. Ron is much better a man than he will ever be aware and even when he achieves something he’d always dreamed of or never thought he’d actually do (e.g. be part of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, become a prefect and even save Harry’s life), he believes “that makes him sound a lot cooler than he actually was.” But the truth is, Ron, you were cool, amazing, really and - Harry and Hermione always knew this - you are and will always be an irreplaceable part of the dream team. If you still don’t believe me - just check out the Chocolate Frog with your name in it. Only the most important wizards and witches appear on those and you are there with a reason.
